Women On Wellness

March is Women’s International History Month

As we celebrate the accomplishments of women we must also stress the importance of how we take care of ourselves.

“Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare” - Audrey Lord

The Benefits of Walking

Walking is the number one activity everywhere and one of the best forms of exercise that one can do.  I began walking as exercise years ago following in the footsteps of my brother and my mother.  They would walk the neighborhood track everyday, sometimes twice daily.  People begin walking for many different reasons.  I always liked walking with several people because we engage in great conversation.  Soon after I began getting up early to walk the track alone. I always feel great after a mile and a half walk.

  1. Walking burns as many calories as jogging.  I am not a jogger but I sometimes walk fast.
  2. Walking eases back pain
  3. Walking slims your waist
  4. Walking lowers blood pressure
  5. Walking Enhances stamina

Self-Care For Caregivers

Caring for a family member, friend, or a spouse for a long period of time will take its toll on one’s body, physically and mentally. In 2016 Baby Boomers represented twenty-three percent of caregivers in the US population. Now, a decade later the baby boomer population is aging and there is a need for caregivers to take care of them.

Self-care is imperative for caregivers. Caregivers tend to neglect their own needs while caring for a loved one.  A caregiver cannot afford to fall into bad health because they would no longer be able to care for themselves or anyone else.

How will you commit to self-care this month?

  1. Unplug from social media/TV
  2. Home spa pampering
  3. Spending time alone
  4. Taking a nice long walk
  5. Make your doctors appointments
  6. Getting adequate rest
  7. Eat foods that fuel your energy

The most important self-care act is to Mind Your Business and Drink Water.

Happy Spring!!
